Mountain Majesty: Our McGill Campground Excursion

While our usual haunt, Hart Bar Campground, was closed this year, sometimes detours lead to hidden gems. 

Our recent adventure took us to McGill Campground in the Los Padres National Forest, nestled amongst towering pines. We hiked a trail on Mt. Pinos, had Nerf gun battles, chilled in a hammock, and took in the views of San Joaquin Valley beneath us. Of course there were many s'mores.

We enjoy the incredible diversity California has to offer, from the sun-baked deserts to the salty spray of the ocean breeze to the cool mountain air.

The benefits of spending time unplugged in nature are well-known, and this is one of the special things about Cub Scout Pack 4. 

McGill Campground delivered on all fronts. Sometimes a change of plans can lead to an even more enriching adventure.

California Dreamin': Beach Camping in Carpinteria!

Calling all Camp-Curious Cub Scouts!

Our Cub Scout pack hits the great outdoors three times a year, exploring different landscapes: the glorious California desert (think Joshua Tree!), the inviting ocean (Carpinteria or San Diego!), and the crisp mountain air (we have a couple favorite spots!).

We understand camping isn't for everyone, and there's absolutely no pressure to join every trip. But for those who love spending quality time with their Scouts in nature, we have a well-oiled system to make it a breeze.

Thinking about giving camping a try but feeling a little unsure? No worries! All you really need is a tent. Some families in our pack even have extras they're happy to lend, and renting is always an option.

Now, let's be honest: while I enjoy camping, comfort is also a priority for me! My secret weapons for a comfortable camping trip? Extra padding for your sleeping area (goodbye uneven ground), earplugs for a peaceful night's sleep, an eye mask to block out early morning light -- and lots of wipes!

But trust me, the fun the kids have together and the memories made under the stars are truly priceless.

Get Ready, Get Set, Race! It's Pinewood Derby Time!

 

The Thrills of Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby

Every April, the roar of engines (well, maybe not quite engines) fills the air as Cub Scouts across the country gear up for the beloved Pinewood Derby. It's a competition where creativity meets engineering and culminates in a thrilling race day.

Building a Champion:

Each kid gets a Pinewood Derby kit - think block of wood, wheels, axles, and rudimentary weights - the blank canvas for each Scout's imagination. Within established weight and size limits, the goal is simple: build the fastest car! The kids get to experiment with design, test their problem-solving skills, and learn a little about physics - because gravity helps power those miniature racers.

Race Day:

This year we hosted a couple "build your car" meetups at our Scout House. A few parents brought tools others of us don't have, and it was fun and effective to have the option to do it this way.

Next comes race day. Look below to see a showcase of one-of-a-kind car creations, each brimming with personality. During the race, multiple heats whittle down the contenders until the top three racers take home the coveted First, Second, and Third Place trophies. They truly are coveted! 

Beyond the Finish Line:

Speed isn't everything at our Pinewood Derby. Every Scout pours their heart and soul into their car, so we celebrate their efforts with special awards. Think "Best Paint Job" or "Most Creative Design" – categories that acknowledge the kids' artistic talents and out-of-the-box thinking.

Double the Fun:

This year, we welcomed Cub Scout Pack 13 to join the race day festivities! Our fantastic space at Westminster Presbyterian Church buzzed with even more energy as the Scouts cheered each other on - a true testament to the camaraderie and sportsmanship that Scouting fosters.

A NASA Scientist Teaches The Earth Rocks!

The Bear den learned about rocks and got their Geology badge! This adventure was led by one of our parents, who happens to be a NASA scientist. 

They had to:

• Explain to the den what "geology" means.
• Collect samples of rocks and explain how each was formed (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic).
• Collect samples of three minerals. Explain what a mineral is and show and tell about the collected minerals. 

They are so engaged as they learn.

Blue and Gold Goes Potluck!

Every February, Cub Scout packs across the nation celebrate Scouting's birthday with a Blue and Gold banquet. Many packs use this time to officially "bridge" Webelos 2 scouts over to Boy Scouts once they have earned their coveted Arrow of Light badge.

Our Pack's Unique Twist:

We acknowledge all the Scouts' rank advancements together at the end of the scouting year, and we keep our Blue and Gold light and fun! We transformed it into a delicious potluck dinner – a perfect opportunity for community building and fun. 

Why Potlucks are Awesome:

• Strong Community: Potlucks foster a sense of shared responsibility and teamwork. It's a fantastic way for newer families to connect with other families who are not in their den.
• Variety and Deliciousness: The potluck offers a diverse and delectable spread of food. It's a fun way for kids to try new things and enjoy a meal together.
• Relaxed Atmosphere: Potlucks are naturally casual, creating a more relaxed and enjoyable environment for everyone.

Fun with Minimal Effort

Our pack found the potluck format is a perfect way to celebrate in February, especially after a busy few months of scouting and personal activities. The relaxed atmosphere and delicious food created a fun and memorable experience for everyone.

An Annual Tradition: Scout Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church

Finding a Home at Westminster Presbyterian Church

Cub Scout Pack 4 is fortunate to have a wonderful partnership with Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena. The church generously provides us with a dedicated Scout House, a perfect space for meetings and activities like our annual Pinewood Derby. We are grateful for their ongoing support.

A Community that Values All Beliefs

The Scouting principle of "Duty to God" is important, but we respect the diverse beliefs of our scouts and their families. Spiritual activities and badges earned in Cub Scouts are completed at home, allowing each family to explore their own faith journey. When we gather for group prayers, we strive for inclusivity, using prayers from various faiths and motivational words from speakers with diverse backgrounds.

Celebrating Scouting at Scout Sunday

Every February, Pack 4 proudly participates in Scout Sunday at the church. The scouts participate in the morning service with a flag ceremony and readings, showcasing the values we learn in Scouting to the wider community. It's a special opportunity to celebrate our achievements and show our appreciation for the support we receive.

Winter Fun at Camp Pollock! (Even Without the Snow!)

While winter camp at Camp Pollock didn't bring the snow this year, Cub Scout Pack 4 wasn't fazed! We traded snowballs for sunshine and had a blast exploring the beautiful mountain setting.

This Scout Council trip is a fun-filled getaway with cozy cabins, cafeteria meals with all the offerings you would expect, and winter activities.

The kids enjoyed craft projects, challenged themselves on the indoor climbing wall, and explored the mountain landscape on some great hikes.

They had a blast, even without the traditional sledding fun. Stay tuned for more upcoming Scouting adventures!

 

Pack 4's December Adventures: From Model Trains to Toy Car Masterpieces!

Adventures in Altadena-Pasadena!

December was a blast for Pack 4! We dove headfirst into two unique experiences, and both events were a huge hit with the scouts.

Model Train Magic at a Private Home:

Our first adventure took us to a local resident's home, transformed into a miniature train wonderland! Amateur train enthusiasts from across the state showcased their meticulously detailed tracks and intricate locomotives. It was like a private museum filled with the joy of model trains. Our scouts were amazed by the craftsmanship and the sheer amount of detail in each display.

Behind the Scenes at the ArtCenter College of Design:

We were fortunate enough to participate in a special event at the ArtCenter College of Design. The highlight? A tour of the workshops! Seeing the incredible tools used for building and design firsthand sparked creativity and curiosity in our young scouts. They learned about the process, explored various materials, and gained a deeper appreciation for handcrafted objects. This visit perfectly complemented our Scouting focus on hands-on experiences.

Scouts as Art Critics!

Adding a playful twist, the ArtCenter students themselves had been tasked with designing toy cars! The students were being reviewed by the faculty that evening. Our scouts also took on the role of art critics, evaluating the cars based on functionality, design, creativity, and paint jobs. They had a blast choosing their favorite, and we even awarded a special "Pack 4 Favorite" prize!

Overall, December was a month filled with discovery, hands-on learning, and festive cheer for Pack 4. We can't wait to see what adventures await us next!
